  • BFI Southbank opens with a classic campaign »

A poster campaign by Hoop Associates is released this week to celebrate the launch of the UK’s home for film at BFI Southbank.

A poster campaign by Hoop Associates breaks this week to celebrate the launch of the UK’s home for film at BFI Southbank.

Formerly the National Film Theatre, the revamped centre features three cinemas, studio, gallery, film store and Mediatheque; which allows free access to the BFI National Archive.

    Mitch Jenkins

Hoop Associates collaborated with photographer Mitch Jenkins to recreate iconic scenes from three classic movies on London’s South Bank.

Shot on location around BFI Southbank in one night, all three images were captured before sunrise. Hoop’s Creative Director David Caines, said, “Mitch’s cinematic ability with lighting meant he was a natural choice for this challenging brief.”

    Iconic images

The final three images pay tribute to Gene Kelly in the classic musical ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1951); the gang of ‘droogs’ on the prowl from Stanley Kubrick’s controversial ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (1971), and the original cinema vampire, Count Orlok from the silent horror masterpiece ‘Nosferatu’ (F.W.Murnau 1922).

Aiming to recreate the look and feel of the original films, the team tried to catch all the detail in camera, with only the sinister shadow of Count Orlok added in post-production.

The campaign will run on London Underground, at BFI Southbank, and in the national press until 22 April.
